Rome: The Imperial Fora
Rome first became a major artistic centre during ancient Rome, with forms of important Roman art such as architecture, painting, sculpture and mosaic work. Rome contains a vast collection of art, sculpture, fountains, mosaics, frescos, and paintings, from all different periods. Rome contains numerous ancient sites, including the Forum Romanum, Trajan’s Market, Trajan’s Forum, the Colosseum, and the Pantheon, to name but a few. I always order ricotta with honey or fig – it’s a classic Roman flavour tourists skip for chocolate. I’ve thrown coins into the Trevi Fountain at least a dozen times and I still believe it works – heck I not only came back to Rome, I came back to live! As of 2026, it now costs €2.00 to see the Trevi Atefia Casino Fountain – tickets can be bought directly at the entrance located in Via della Stamperia. Entry is free which still amazes me given it’s one of the greatest buildings ever constructed.
The best time to visit Rome: navigating seasons and crowds
In 2025, it handled approximately 50.9 million arriving and departing passengers, exceeding the 50-million-passenger threshold for the first time; including direct transit passengers, total traffic amounted to approximately 51.3 million. Rome’s cuisine has evolved through centuries and periods of social, cultural, and political changes. These are usually ancient statues which have become popular soapboxes for political and social discussion, and places for people to (often satirically) voice their opinions. Apart from brief periods as an independent city during the Middle Ages, Rome kept its status as Papal capital and holy city for centuries, even when the Papacy briefly relocated to Avignon (1309–1377). The period was also infamous for papal corruption, with many Popes fathering children, and engaging in nepotism and simony. In this period, the papacy played a role of secular importance in Western Europe, often acting as arbitrators between Christian monarchs and exercising additional political powers.

Located on Lungotevere de’ Cenci, one of the oldest in the world, second only to that of Venice, the Ghetto of Rome was founded in 1555 at the behest of Pope Paul IV. At that exact hour, the Emperor Hadrian crossed the threshold of the temple so that the people could admire his whole figure surrounded by light, like a god. Its dome, with its 43.44 m internal diameter, is still the widest hemispherical dome ever built in unreinforced concrete, larger than that of St. Peter’s. Between 112 and 125 A.D., Hadrian had it rebuilt, enlarging it, reversing its orientation and opening a large porticoed square in front of the new temple.

During its first two centuries, the empire was ruled by emperors of the Julio-Claudian, Flavian and Antonine dynasties.
